8:30PM EST Update: ~400 arrested, NYPD helicopters patrolling the sky.
Early estimates made by the New York Police Department place the number of protesters on and around Wall Street at approximately thirty-thousand. The widespread, decentralized protest marking the second month of the occupation of Wall Street was invigorated by calls for a day of action. Mass arrests were made by the NYPD at sunset in addition to the hundreds of protesters arrested during the day.
Current protester hotspots extend beyond Zuccotti Park and Foley Square as occupiers have attempted to flood subway stations and the Brooklyn Bridge.
99 protesters were also arrested in the afternoon while staging a sit in on a highly trafficked street bringing the total number of those arrested to 276(Police commissioner Ray Kelly stated that 177 were arrested earlier on in the day.)
While the occupiers failed to blockade the New York Stock Exchange and “shut down” Wall Street, November 17th may mark their largest demonstration thus far.
